Best Odds Guaranteed (BOG) is a horse racing offer that is typically available every day at almost all bookmakers. BOGs tend to only apply to UK and Irish horse races.
As mentioned in a previous section, odds for horse races tend to fluctuate much more frequently compared to other sports. Bookmakers offer BOGs in order to balance out these frequent fluctuations.
With BOGs, you are guaranteed the best odds for your horse from the moment you place your bet to when the race begins!
For example, if the odds for your horse was 5.2 at the time you placed a £10 stake (e.g. a few hours prior to the start of the race):
- And those odds increased to 7.0 at the start of the race and your horse wins – your winnings will be paid out at 7.0 rather than 5.2 (so you will be paid £70 instead of £52 on a £10 stake), or
- If those odds decreased to 4.0 at the start of the race and your horse wins – your winnings will still be paid out at 5.2 rather than the lower 4.0 (so you will still be paid £52, not £40 on a £10 stake)
For matched bettors, BOGs offer a nice potential bonus on top of the main offers that we are aiming for because they can apply in addition to other offers. For example, if we’re matched betting on a horse race in order to complete a Welcome Offer or any other relevant offer and our horse wins with the increased odds, then not only do we profit from unlocking our intended free bet or bonus, but we also profit in cash from a bigger payout by the bookmaker! Because with a BOG payout, we receive a higher amount from the bookmaker than the amount we lose as liability on the exchange!
Only bookmakers offer BOGs; exchanges do not so your liability will not increase if the bookmaker’s odds increase.
Here’s a simple scenario to help you understand further:
Let’s say we are matched betting on the offer ‘Bet £10 on a horse race and get a £10 free bet’. Our primary aim here is simply to unlock the £10 free bet.
Now let’s say that the best match we have found is on Horse A, racing today at Cheltenham 15.50. The back odds of Horse A is 5.0 and the lay odds is 5.3. As you can see from our Matched Betting Calculator, based on these odds with a £10 stake, the Qualifying Loss (QL) is -£0.57 with a liability of £40.55.
At 15.50 when the race begins, if the odds for Horse A increases to 7.0 and it wins, then we will make an immediate cash profit on top of the £10 free bet we unlocked, because:
- £70 bookmaker payout (£10 stake x 7.0) – £10 stake = £60 bookmaker winnings
- £60 bookmaker winnings – £40.55 exchange liability = £19.45 overall profit
So at the increased odds of 7.0 with a £10 stake, we will actually end up with an overall cash profit of £19.45 on top of receiving a £10 free bet!
If the odds for Horse A decreases or stays the same when the race begins and it wins, or if the horse loses altogether, then we simply incur the -£0.57 QL but still receive our £10 free bet!
Here is an example of a BOG:
When we placed our £20 matched bet prior to the race, Whataguy had back odds of 9/2 (5.5) and lay odds of 5.6, meaning that our QL was -£0.36 regardless of whether the horse wins or loses.
Fortunately for us, at the start of the race, the back odds for Whataguy had increased to 5/1 (6.0) and the horse ended up winning the race!
So instead of incurring a -£0.36 QL, we actually made a cash profit of £9.66 from this BOG!
- £120 bookmaker payout (£20 stake x 6.0) – £20 stake = £100 bookmaker winnings
- £100 bookmaker winnings – £90.34 exchange liability = £9.66 overall profit
The profit potential from BOGs can vary greatly – we have personally seen cash profits of £5 to £350+ from a single BOG!
Although BOGs offer a nice additional payout, there is no real strategy involved as it’s difficult to predict which horses will have their odds increased at the start of the race. The best way to profit from BOGs is to do as many horse racing offers and promotions as you can find and hope to hit a winning horse with increased odds!
